Tuesday was a big day for Apple CEO Tim Cook and the company as a whole.

Cook finally stepped out of Steve Jobs’ looming shadow, as he unveiled the iPhone 6, new payment systems and the new and improved Apple Watch at an Apple event Tuesday at California’s Flint Center for the Performing Arts. Although Cook has done a solid job since taking over as CEO in 2011, this was his coming-out party, where he showed off some news-making innovations.

So we hate to do this to Cook, on his big day, because he is a great leader who deserves all kinds of credit. But really, Cook’s performance was a testament to Jobs.

And, fundamentally, it is a lesson on how to live forever.

How Do You Live Forever?

Obviously, no human body can live forever. It slowly dies over time, with the longest one living for 127 years (unless you believe the story about the man who lived to 256).

But humans aren’t really defined by our bodies anyway. After all, there are animals with much more impressive bodies than our own. What separates humans is our minds; specifically, our thoughts and ideas, and those can live forever.

And Jobs is proving it.

Ok, So How Is Jobs Living Forever?

The thing about Jobs is he really didn’t start a company. He came up with an idea and executed it. His idea was to build a place that would construct the most innovative and beautiful objects in the world, that would thrill and entertain the masses.

Jobs died three years ago. And yet that idea lives on, with Tuesday proving that, as Apple continues to make innovative and beautiful objects that thrill and entertain the masses.

But the key to living forever is that Jobs didn’t just come up with this great idea and then had it die with him. He ensured his mind would continue to live on years after his body dies by creating a strong culture, bringing on the right people and having them buy into his ideals.

Takeaway

Think about it. Jobs could have created a situation where he was a great inventor who came up with some ideas that changed the world. But it would have been all about him; once he died, the inventions would stop and his mind would die along with it.

Instead, he brought on people who either shared his vision or were eager to buy into his vision. He shared his ideas with others and built a movement, which continues today.

The point is, as counterintuitive as it sounds, the way to live forever is ultimately to become replaceable. And that happens by coming up with the right idea, bringing on the right people (in this case, hiring well) that can make it happen and getting them to buy into your ideals.
